Description

This is a work based on an art square I did my senior year of high school. The goal of the assignment was to communicate using an alternative text system. I chose origami instructions to attempt to convey the comforting circular rhythm that emerges when bringing life to paper.

Long story short, this project fell flat on its face. The cranes are much happier on a 6 x 6 foot wall, not a 9 x 9 foot wall as the project required. However, I got full technical points.

The origami pieces are made out of 21 inch posterboard, 30 inch bulletin board paper, and some other ridiculously large 48" roll paper that I found. They are colored with Liquitex Acrylics or Krylon spray paint, depending on how impatient I grew with them. Dotted lines were drawn with Sharpie with the aid of a ruler. The wall is painted with Dutch Boy acrylic interior paint.

Everything is held up by finishing nails that are barely visible. The completed crane's wing is held up from the bottom by a paper stand. Origami pieces are kept shut with lots and lots of duct tape.

The worst part about this project? Having to repaint the wall white once I finished, and breaking an art department camera when trying to photograph this. SO GLAD IT'S OVER.

Mixed-media installation. October 2009.
